Visiting Burning Man Facilities in Nevada
Burning Man staff, volunteers, and visitors who have business with us are welcome at our Nevada facilities, but please phone ahead first (775-557-2200).
From the SF Bay Area, take Hwy I-80 east to Reno, a good place to stop and get supplies. From Reno, Nevada, continue on Hwy 1-80 east for approximately 30 miles. Take the Wadsworth-Pyramid Lake Exit #43 to State Route 447, and go north. There is a gas station just north of the exit. One mile north is Wadsworth; turn left, staying on 447. It's 75 miles to Empire where gas and supplies are available. Continue three miles on 447 to Gerlach where gas is also available.
Mind the speed limits everywhere! Several small towns you'll pass through have schools, children, livestock, slow-moving vehicles, and 25 MPH zones. The local law enforcement, which include Paiute Reservation police and county sheriffs, are very strict about speed and reckless driving.
When you get into Gerlach you'll pass a Texaco station on the right, then in a few blocks the Black Rock Saloon on the right. The Burning Man office is on the left, opposite the Black Rock Saloon. Stop and check in there. If no one is there, continue on down the same road. State Route 34 splits off to the right about one-half mile northwest of town.
Route 34 goes north, passing along the west side of the Black Rock Desert playa, at the base of the Granite Range. You will pass the 3-Mile, 10-Mile, and 12-Mile entrances to the playa (measured in approximate distances north of Gerlach). The 10-Mile was the entrance used for Burning Man in the year 2000. These entrances are often used as reference points for playa cleanup and BLM volunteer activities.
About 20 miles north of Gerlach, the pavement ends and the road turns to gravel. At the first driveway, Jackson Lane (typically unmarked) turn right (east). The first driveway on the right leads to the Work Ranch.
The Work Ranch is about two hours from Reno. We prefer you arrive and check in during daytime hours. If it is past midnight you may need to camp in your car at the gate, or camp on the playa. Please check in at the Work Ranch office in the morning.
The Burning Man website also has directions to Nevada. A good map to have in the car is the DeLorme Nevada Atlas and Gazetteer. Online topographic maps with GPS coordinates are available from Topozone. Drive carefully, stay awake, and watch for pedestrians and livestock.

- Dogs are allowed on the work ranch.
- However, it is best if you leave your dog at home.
- For sure, you have to make arrangements to keep your dog somewhere during the week of the burning man event.
- For entry on Black Rock Station, all dogs MUST have current shots on file with DPW.
- Any dog with current shots should have a tag saying so on its collar.
- This tag must be present and proper verification on file with DPW.
- This is what you need proof of: rabies and DHLPP (distemper, parvo, corona -viruses) are very important.
Young and older dogs will die if they get the parvo or distemper virus. It's rare that they survive and it's an airborne
virus. A lot of people that don't get their puppies vaccinated soon enough will lose them to those two things.
- Shots must be updated once a year.
- Some rabies shots are now good for three years, but it should say so on their papers.
- Kennel cough (bordatella) is another regular thing, but is not required. It's usually for dogs that are going to be in really close quarters with other dogs. It isn't a shot, it's a liquid that they squeeze into the dog's nostrils.
- All dogs must be under owners verbal command at all times or shall be leashed. "Verbal command" means that the dog consistently obeys the owner's verbal orders. Dogs, which do not, must be leashed or combined to quarters.
- Dog owners are responsible for their dogıs safety and health.
- A dog run will be available. Heat and lack of exercise endangers dogs and promotes aggressive behavior.
- Dogs are not allowed in the food service areas, the ranch house, or any area not permitted to dogs.
- Do not approach dogs with which you are not familiar or dogs that are leashed. Ask owner's advice or permission before
approaching any dog for the first time. Do not make threatening gestures or commands to otherıs dogs.
- No unpermitted dogs allowed in the vicinity of heavy equipment or other operations hazardous to dogs or other persons.
- Dogs which exhibit recurring behavior deemed threatening will be confined to ownerıs quarters and confined to leash or pen.
- Uncontrolled or vicious dogs will be ejected or otherwise dealt with in accordance with Nevada law and custom.
- Note especially that all pet owners are legally responsible for their pet's actions.
- All dog owners shall patrol for dog shit.
- Everyone that brings dogs to the ranch, including office workers, volunteers, artists, and their friends/lovers/hitchhikers/camp followers, etc, shal follow these guidelines.
- Please send dog identification and shot info to DPW in Gerlach ASAP.
